The NDSS National Gestational Diabetes Register – supporting the postnatal follow-up and care of women with gestational diabetes.

Synopsis In Australia, more than 40,000 women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes and registered on the National Diabetes Services Scheme* (NDSS) each year. Gestational diabetes is associated with long-term health risks beyond pregnancy, including a 7-fold increased risk of future type 2 diabetes. After a pregnancy with gestational diabetes, postnatal follow-up, ongoing type 2 diabetes checks and support for a healthy lifestyle are vital.

The National Gestational Diabetes Register (NGDR) was established in 2011, as part of the NDSS, to assist in postnatal care of women with gestational diabetes. Women on the NGDR and their nominated general practitioner (GP) receive a schedule of reminders and information for postnatal screening and follow-up. This presentation will provide an update on the recent evaluation of the NGDR and improvements to the delivery of postnatal reminders, information and support. The important role of diabetes educators and primary health care professionals will be discussed.
